Oh, Sleeper – Son Of The Morning Review

Closed

In 2007 Oh, Sleeper released their debut recording on Solid State Records. When I Am God was a finely-crafted masterpiece of heavy metaphors and many a call to arms. The Ft. Worth, Texas boys have returned, in the wake of two years of constant touring and little rest, with Son Of The Morning. The metalcore bands sophomore record has completely redefined their sound and style. The record is a concept album telling of the final battle between God and Satan. This epic theme is carried perfectly through the tracks and even in the art for the album. The pentagram is used but it is not your average pentagram, its horns have been removed. This adds to the total package as the art is an allusion to the closing lyrics of the album.

Fiction Family – Review

Closed

Jon Foreman has been a very busy man. Switchfoot, solo EPs and now Fiction Family. And I love it all. No suspenseful buildup here, there it is. I like this latest offering of Jon’s. It is an appropriate title as the album is an awakening for the band, a return to form as well as a subtle exploration of maturity and musical evolution. It features the familiar massive riffs, catchy hooks, sing-a-long choruses and a new found lyrical complexity. However, it is instantly obvious that the band has not evolved that much. Comatose is always present in the background of Awake, just when it seems the band is moving forward a song will change to something we’ve heard before. Awake is Comatose part two and it would have been more honest to label it that way. A problem Skillet has never had before is repetition but it seems the band have finally come to the point where they have run out of new ideas.

Anberlin – Live @ The Powerstation

Closed

As the line outside Mt Eden’s Powerstation in Auckland grew, you could sense the anticipation growing with every minute. Anberlin, the Florida based Christian rockers, hadn’t been in New Zealand shores since they graced the main stage at the 2006 Parachute festival. Three and a half years had been far too long to wait. As the doors opened, The Powerstation slowly but surely started to grow in volume, with every new patron adding more to the already thick atmosphere of anticipation and excitement.
