Jon Foreman has been a very busy man. Switchfoot, solo EPs and now Fiction Family. And I love it all. No suspenseful buildup here, there it is. I like this latest offering of Jon’s. And it’s not just Jon here either. The other member of this little family is Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek, who is no less musically prolific himself. According to the Fiction Family website (www.ficitonfamily.com), the duo have been working on these songs between tours since 2005, and have now built them up to a full album.

Following up their Grammy-award nominated 2006 outing Comatose, Christian rock band Skillet return with eighth album Awake. It is an appropriate title as the album is an awakening for the band, a return to form as well as a subtle exploration of maturity and musical evolution. It features the familiar massive riffs, catchy hooks, sing-a-long choruses and a new found lyrical complexity. However, it is instantly obvious that the band has not evolved that much. Comatose is always present in the background of Awake, just when it seems the band is moving forward a song will change to something we’ve heard before. Awake is Comatose part two and it would have been more honest to label it that way. A problem Skillet has never had before is repetition but it seems the band have finally come to the point where they have run out of new ideas.
